Trojans beat Broncos to secure weekend sweep
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 17, 2020) - Don't look now, but the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team are on a winning streak.
Kelsey Patterson (2nd year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology) scored twice as she led her Trojans a sweep-inducing 3-1 victory over the visiting Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. It was their second victory in as many nights, as the team won 4-3 the night before in Olds, Alta.
"The girls are pretty pumped and excited right now," said Patterson, who also scored twice in her team's victory on Thursday. "We've worked hard this past week in practice, and to see it pay off was nice."
The win not only gives SAIT their first sweep of the season, but it was also the team's first win on home ice. With their record now at 4-11-1 they have vaulted past the Broncos (3-11-2) for the fourth and final playoff position in the ACAC standings.
"Our lines clicked this weekend, everyone was going," added Patterson. "We worked together as a team and seemed to finally be on the same page."
The Trojans opened the scoring in the first period when Paige Halderman's (2nd year, Calgary, Health Fundamentals) shot from the blue line found its way past Olds goalie Lexi Bruce on the power play.
Patterson scored her first of the game in the second period to double SAIT's lead on another power play marker.
After Olds cut the lead in half 13 minutes into the third period on a goal by Brianna Marsh, Patterson added her second of the contest into an empty net as an insurance marker.
Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) stopped 23 of 24 shots in the win.
The Trojans return to action in two weeks when they meet the MacEwan Griffins in a home-and-home series set for Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
