Trojans move winning streak to three
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 16, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans women's soccer team are on a roll.
The Trojans earned their third-straight win, beating the visiting Red Deer College Queens 2-0 in their Wednesday afternoon Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.
"It was an awesome performance by our team today," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "With some of the injuries that we have, we managed to pull through and get the job done."
SAIT moves to 5-3-2 on the season, and now sit in third place in the ACAC South Division, holding the final playoff berth available. Red Deer falls to 4-6.
A couple of weeks back, a post-season spot did not look in the cards for the Trojans. However, the team has come together and are starting to play their best soccer of the season.
"We talked about being a family, and that's what we have become," Talerico said smiling. "They know we're shorthanded, so they're keeping things simple. We need to win games, and that's what they're doing."
Jade Metz (1st year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) fired a missile into the top left corner of the net in the first half to score the only goal SAIT needed on the day. The goal gives Metz 11 on the year.
In the second half, Hayley Gonzalez (1st year, Calgary, Community Economic Development) scored an insurance marker.
Stine Thorne (1st year, Calgary, Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles) started in net for SAIT, and made a handful of key saves to keep her bid for a shutout alive - including a penalty kick in the second half that she guessed right on.
SAIT will return to action on Friday when they host Ambrose University at 4pm.
