Trojans open season with sweep of Lions
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 4, 2018) — Opening night nerves are something you never get over, no matter how old you are.
The SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team saw a bit of everything, as they rolled to a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-21) victory over the Ambrose University Lions in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) home opener Thursday night at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"It was a good start to gain a bit of confidence, as we are a really young team," said Trojans setter, Elly Prince (3rd year, Calgary, Legal Assistant) "We were able to get the jitters out here in the first match, so that was awesome."
SAIT moves to 1-0 on the season, while Ambrose University falls to 0-1.
"Our middles ran a really fast offense, and our passing was very good," added Prince. "That made things really easy for us."
The opening set started out pretty even for both teams, but the Trojans were able to take control and ran away with a dominant first-set win thanks to their defense at the net, which accounted for 16 total blocks in the game.
Set 2 stayed tight the whole way through, with SAIT coming back late to pull out the win and take control of the match.
The final set saw Ambrose fight to stay in the match, but errors sealed their fate – the final point coming on an overpassed ball by SAIT that fell between a couple of Lions players who could only look on in disbelief.
Jadyn Leong (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) led the Trojans with 12 kills, while Prince dished out 28 assists.
Julia Kemper led the Lions with seven kills.
The Trojans will return to action on Oct. 12 and 13 when they welcome the Briercrest College Clippers to town for a pair of games – 6pm Friday night and 1pm Saturday afternoon.
