Trojans stumble against Briercrest
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 12, 2018) — Simply put, the SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team gave away too many points.
The Trojans' slow start Friday night cost them, as they fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) to the visiting Briercrest College Clippers in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"We just didn't match their intensity and execution," said Trojans head coach Art O'Dwyer. "They played well, didn't give us much of a chance. And we made enough errors to make it fairly easy on them."
SAIT falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Clippers improve to 1-0.
"I think some of our players were a little overwhelmed at the speed and the intensity of tonight's game," O'Dwyer suggested. "Hopefully, we take that as a learning opportunity and play better next game."
The trouble began in the opening set, where a host of hitting and service errors gave the visiting Clippers a commanding lead shortly after the start of the set.
"We fought so hard for every time we would get the ball back to get a point, and then we would give them three free ones. You just can't do that at this level if you want to compete," stated O'Dwyer.
The longtime head coach felt his team played better in the second and third set, and said he would focus on that in their post-game meeting.
Simran Dhami (5th year, Golden, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) led SAIT with six blocks to go along with six kills. Becky Garner paced the Clippers with a game-high 12 kills.
The teams will play tomorrow afternoon at 1pm in their weekend finale.
