Trojans clinch weekend sweep of Kodiaks

CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 20, 2018) — To complete their weekend sweep, the SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team went down a different road on Saturday night.

 

The Trojans needed five sets, as they grinded out a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-11, 15-11) victory over the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played inside SAIT Gymnasium. The win comes 24 hours after the Trojans rolled to a quick 3-0 win in Lethbridge, Alta.

 

"I think we came out a little bit flat and we didn't adjust," said Trojans head coach Art O'Dwyer. "They did some things different and were a little more efficient tonight. We too many errors tonight, and they didn't make as many as they did on Friday."

 

SAIT improves to 3-2 on the year. The Kodiaks fall to 1-3.

 

After trading the first two sets, the Trojans found themselves down 12-1 in the third set.

 

In an effort to create a spark, O'Dwyer put in Shaelynne Roux (3rd year, Bonnyville, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration). The veteran middle/outside in her first year with the Trojans came in and was able to hammer home a few kills right away to get her team's energy up.

 

"That's what you hope for in a sub, you don't want them to go in and be passive," said O'Dwyer. "She's an experienced player, who was hungry to get on the court. I am proud of her."

 

Roux finished the night with seven kills and 10 digs in just three sets of play.

 

Although they lost the set 25-22, the Trojans showed more signs of life, which they carried over to the fourth.

 

In the fourth, the teams traded points back and forth. Leading 12-11, Hayli Hinchey (5th year, Edmonton, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) went back to the line, and stayed there for 13 straight serves as her Trojans went on a massive roll to take the set 25-11.

 

"You see it a lot with her; she's a good server and she knows how hard to hit to put the other teams in trouble," O'Dwyer stated.

 

In the fifth set, SAIT took the lead early and led 8-7 at the switch. After that, the Trojans took control of the match and finished it off on the 17th kill of the night by Jadyn Leong (2nd year, Calgary, Emergency Medical Technician).

 

Carley Doneff led the Kodiaks with 11 kills.

 

The Trojans return to action next weekend with a home-and-home set against Red Deer College – Friday at home and Saturday on the road.
