Trojan volleyball teams sweep Rattlers
MEDICINE HAT, ALTA., (Jan. 18, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans men's and women's volleyball teams earned a pair of road wins over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Saturday night.
The women's team won in five sets, 3-2 (25-20, 12-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-12), while the men needed four sets to get the job done, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 26-24) in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played in Medicine Hat, Alta.
After winning in straight sets Friday, SAIT's women's team knew they were going to get a better effort from the Rattlers on Saturday.
Down 1-0 in the match, the Rattlers stormed back to dominate Sets 2 and 3.
SAIT responded by tying the match, and then winning it in Set 5. Head coach Art O'Dwyer was impressed by his team's ability to fight back and win the match.
"The way we won tonight showed some maturity," he said. "Friday's win we played well and had no adversity. We had that tonight, and battled through it."
Jadyn Leong (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) led the Trojans with 16 kills, three service aces and nine digs.
SAIT moves to 4-14 on the season. Med Hat falls to 8-8.
On the men's side, SAIT dropped the first set before winning the next three.
Setter Maddux Greves (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) had a strong game for SAIT, as he dished out 33 assists to go along with four service aces. Brendan Vanderlinde (3rd year, Sherwood Park, Alta., Machinist Technician) added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.
The Trojans stay atop the ACAC standings at 14-4, while the Rattlers fall to 4-12.
The teams return to action next weekend with a pair of games against the Olds College Broncos - Friday on the road, Saturday at home.
