Trojans build confidence in Lethbridge
LETHBRIDGE, ALTA., (Sept. 22, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans cross-country running teams were not going to let a smaller field stop them from putting in the work needed to succeed down the road.
In an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division Grand Prix event hosted by Lethbridge College on Saturday, just three women’s teams and two men’s teams competed. The men’s team took first place, while the women’s side placed second.
“It’s good to still be in that mentality where you do a proper warmup, and then get out there and run strong,” said Trojans co-head coach Bre MacEachern.
She added that Saturday’s event was the first time the Trojans women’s side was able to field a full team of four runners, and she was happy to see them come together and put in a strong showing.
Emilie Mann (2nd year, Fernie, BC, Respiratory Therapy) placed second in the 6-kilometre race in a time of 24:05, while teammate Ann Danard (2nd year, Thunder Bay, Ont., Civil Engineering Technology finished fourth in 25:54.
Mandy Vocke (2nd year, Calgary, Radio Television Broadcast News) placed ninth, while newcomer Ellie Chai (1st year, Calgary, Office Professional) took 11th.
“We were super pumped to get a team of ladies out, and they all did great today,” MacEachern stated. “Next week, we’ll have a full team out as well, so we are excited to see what they do against a bigger field.”
Matthew Travaglini (4th year, London, Ont., Geomatics Engineering) led the men’s team to yet another first-place finish, by taking top spot in the men’s 8km race for the third-straight weekend with a time of 26:15.
Jacques Saayman (3rd year, Fort McMurray, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) finished right behind Travaglini in second place in a time of 28:06, while Daryl Ross (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) took fifth. Matt Hebert (2nd year, Calgary, Information Technology) took sixth spot.
The Trojans hope build off the confidence gained on Saturday next weekend when they will head to the season’s fourth Grand Prix event, hosted by Lakeland College in Vermillion, Alta.
