Trojans open season in Edmonton
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Sept. 7, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans officially kicked off their 2019-20 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans cross-country running team took part in the year's first Grand Prix event, hosted by the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder. While not all members of the team were in attendance, co-head coach Ryan Edgar was still happy with what he saw their first time out.
The men's team, who are coming off their third-straight ACAC team title, finished first overall in Saturday's showing - ahead of second place Lethbridge College and third place University of Alberta-Augustana.
SAIT will host the ACAC Championships in late October, and Edgar thinks his team has a good shot at adding another banner to the rafters when the time comes. If that should come to pass, it would make SAIT the first men's team in Conference history to win fourth-straight team titles.
Leading the way for the Trojans in the 8-kilometre run was Brant Lauweryssen, who crossed the finish line in third place in a time of 27:04. Teammate Jacques Saayman was right behind in fourth place (27:25). Newcomers Michael Stewart and Jakob Vollmehaus placed seventh (28:59) and 10th (29:24), respectively.
SAIT's women's side had just one runner lace up the shoes. Ann Danard placed sixth in the 6km race in a time of 25:08.
Next up for the Trojans will be Grand Prix #2, hosted by Red Deer College on Saturday, Sept. 14.
