Women’s basketball win two straight against Olds, men split weekend games
The SAIT Trojans women’s basketball team cruised past the Olds College Broncos over the weekend.
The first game on Friday, Jan. 10, at SAIT, saw the Trojans set a new season high for points scored.
After two quarters, the Trojans outscored the Broncos 73-22, jumping to a sizeable lead at halftime.
The Trojans ended the game with a commanding 109-39 victory over the Broncos to start 2025.
Vlada Hozalova led all scorers with 22 points, adding two assists and one rebound for the Trojans.
Ava Kearl, Kyler Varga, and Jaida Wallis showcased the Trojans’ offensive depth, each recording 10 points off the bench.
The Trojans travelled to Olds the next day for a rematch.
For the second game in a row, the Trojans led at halftime, this time 50-27.
Only allowing 17 points in the third and fourth quarters combined, the Trojans’ defence was solid, once again.
In the 92-44 win on Saturday, Brook Baker recorded a game-high 22 points with five rebounds and four assists.
With two wins over the Broncos, the Trojans remain in first place in the ACAC women’s basketball standings with a 10-1 record.
The Trojans’ next game is Friday, Jan. 17, in Lethbridge, where they will take on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks at 6 p.m.
The Trojans men’s basketball team continued its up-and-down season with a win and a loss to the Broncos.
The Trojans hosted the Broncos at SAIT on Friday, Jan. 10, in a back-and-forth game.
Despite being outscored 51-28 at halftime, the Trojans battled back in the third and fourth quarters.
They scored 24 points in the third and 20 in the fourth but fell short, as the Broncos sealed a 78-72 victory.
Will Tong led all scorers, putting up 24 points along with seven rebounds.
The Trojans travelled to Olds the next day to earn a much-needed win against the Broncos.
A strong first and second quarter had the Trojans up 42-17 at halftime.
They continued their strong offensive performance, winning 82-58 and improving to 6-5 on the season.
Deng Dak led the Trojans in scoring with 20 points and added five rebounds.
With the win and the loss, the Trojans remain in fourth place in the ACAC men’s basketball standings.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 17 at the bubble, where they take on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks at 8 p.m.
Women’s hockey drop only game of the weekend to Red Deer, men split two scrappy games
The Trojans women’s hockey team opened 2025 with their first game of the new year against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
On Friday, Jan. 10, the Queens hosted the Trojans for the second time this season. The previous matchup in October saw the Queens victorious, 2-1.
After a scoreless first period, Kyla Hansel scored an unassisted goal to give the Queens a 1-0 lead with eight seconds remaining in the second period.
The Queens added another goal midway through the third period, with Kaedence Mollin scoring. Fiona Sirovyak and Grace Millar registered assists, extending the Queens’ lead to 2-0.
Sirovyak sealed the 3-0 win with an empty-net goal, scored with 21 seconds left in the game.
With the loss, the Trojans are tied for last place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings with a 2-11 record.
Next, the Trojans host a back-to-back home series against the Olds College Broncos on Friday, Jan. 17, at 12:45 p.m. at SLS Centre in Cochrane and Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. at Winsport Arena.
The Trojans men’s hockey team enjoyed immense success in the first half of the season, recording a 9-2 record and sitting atop the ACAC men’s hockey standings.
After a 4-2 win against the NAIT Ooks to start the new year on Friday, Jan. 3, the Trojans faced the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings at Winsport Arena on Friday, Jan. 10.
Deegan Mofford opened the scoring six minutes in, giving the Kings an early 1-0 lead.
The Trojans responded with two goals less than a minute apart, scored by Dylan Clark and Cory King, to take a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period.
Austin Reschny added to the lead midway through the second period, with assists from Coby Ball and Clark, making it 3-1 for the Trojans.
Five minutes later, Kayden Skulmoski extended the lead to 4-1, with Brett Butz and Prososky assisting on the goal.
During the second period, Cory King (Trojans) and Liam Stalwick (Kings) received 10-minute misconducts, leaving both teams without them for the remainder of the game.
The third period featured six goals.
Brandon Machado scored three minutes in, with Carriere and Ball assisting.
57 seconds later, Carriere scored on a power play, assisted by Clark and Reece Richmond.
12 seconds later, Butz netted another goal, bringing the score to 7-1 for the Trojans.
Dawson Leroux scored twice for the Kings midway through the period, narrowing the gap to 7-3.
Following a two-minute minor hooking penalty by Trojans defenceman Prososky, Sean Michalevich scored a power-play goal for the Kings with five minutes remaining.
The Trojans claimed a 7-4 victory in a scrappy game that saw six 10-minute misconducts, 27 total penalties and 102 total penalty minutes.
Both teams travelled to Red Deer the next day for a rematch.
The first period remained scoreless, with only three penalties—a calm start to the night.
Three minutes into the second period, Nathan Degraves scored for the Kings, breaking the deadlock.
Less than two minutes later, Alex Bernauer extended the lead to 2-0, with Tanner Sklaruk and Holden Knights assisting.
In the third period, the Kings sealed the game with two power-play goals, one each from Knights and Bernauer, resulting in a 4-0 victory over the Trojans.
With a win and a loss to the Kings, the Trojans remain in first place in the ACAC men’s hockey standings with an 11-3 record.
The Trojans will host the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at Winsport Arena.
Women’s volleyball dominate Olds two games in a row, men drop both games
The Trojans women’s volleyball team started the new year with back-to-back straight-set wins against the Olds College Broncos.
The Broncos hosted the Trojans on Friday, Jan. 10, in Olds.
In a tightly contested first set, the Trojans secured a 25-22 victory and followed it up with a 25-17 win in the second set.
The Trojans narrowly beat the Broncos 25-22 in the third set to complete the straight-set win.
Grace Florence was named player of the game for the Trojans, while Camryn McDougald received the honour for the Broncos.
The following day, the Trojans hosted the Broncos at Rally Pointe in Calgary and again claimed victory in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.
Sarah Henriksen and Sophia Ferguson led the Trojans in kills, each recording eight.
With the two wins, the Trojans are tied for third place with the Ambrose University Lions, both teams holding a 5-6 record in the ACAC women’s volleyball standings.
Next up for the Trojans women’s volleyball team is a trip to Lethbridge to face the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Friday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m.
The Trojans men’s volleyball team started 2025 with two straight losses to the Olds College Broncos, the first coming Friday night in Olds.
After the Broncos took the first two sets, the Trojans rallied to claim the third. However, the Broncos closed out the match with a 3-1 victory.
Jaxson Thys led the Trojans in the loss with a game-high 17 kills and seven digs.
The teams faced off again the next day, Saturday, Jan. 11, at Rally Pointe in Calgary.
All three sets ended with the same 25-17 score, as the Broncos swept the match and the weekend series.
With the two losses, the Trojans are tied for fourth place in the ACAC men’s volleyball standings, holding a 5-6 record.
The Trojans men’s volleyball team will look to bounce back this weekend against the second-place Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks.
Game one is set for Friday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m. in Lethbridge, with game two scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m. at Rally Pointe in Calgary.
