Women’s hockey drop close games with Rustlers, men split games against Vikings
The Trojans women’s hockey team is peaking at the right time of the season.
Heading into the past weekend, the Trojans were on a three-game win streak.
A 3-2 win against the Olds College Broncos and back-to-back shutout victories over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers were massive confidence boosters ahead of two crucial road games against the league-leading Lakeland College Rustlers.
The first game was Friday, Jan. 31.
Trojans captain Esther Boelema opened the scoring six minutes into the first period, with Mikayla Loewen and Jorja Chevalier assisting.
After 20 minutes, the Trojans held a 1-0 lead.
The Rustlers responded in the second period, as Sydney Grover and Ella Wingert assisted Paris Appel to tie the game.
Grover notched her second assist of the night as Mackenzie Stafford gave the Rustlers a 2-1 lead at the end of the period.
Keyra Buziak scored an unassisted empty-net goal with 1:30 left in the third to seal a 3-1 win for the Rustlers.
Boelema was named player of the game for the Trojans after recording her team-leading 11th point of the season.
On Saturday, the Rustlers opened the scoring early in the first period.
Wingert scored five minutes into the game, and Brooklyn Salewski added a power-play goal two minutes later to give the Rustlers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Following a Grover slashing penalty that sent the Trojans to the power play with two minutes left in the period, Chevalier and Sydney Hollman assisted Camryn Karachi’s goal with 40 seconds remaining in the frame.
Lily Roberts tied the game for the Trojans with two minutes left in the third, sending it to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Addison Eurich won it for the Rustlers 30 seconds into the second overtime, securing a 3-2 victory.
With two losses to the Rustlers, the Trojans remain in fourth place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings with a 5-14 record.
The Trojans face the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Red Deer, before a rematch the next day at 6:15 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
For the Trojans men’s hockey team, two consecutive overtime games against the last-place Portage College Vikings made for an exciting weekend.
Game 1 was Friday, Jan. 31, at WinSport Arena.
Halfway through the first period, Carter Yarish opened the scoring with the lone goal of the frame, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
After a high-sticking penalty to Vikings defenceman Chris Black, Cory King and Dylan Clark assisted Zach Cain’s power-play goal to tie the game heading into the third.
Six minutes into the final frame, Cain scored his second goal of the game, with Zach Cox and Colby Bear assisting, to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes later, the Vikings answered with two straight shorthanded goals just eight seconds apart to take a 3-2 lead.
Cain completed his hat trick with four minutes remaining to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Just 19 seconds into the 3-on-3 period, Bear assisted Cain’s fourth goal of the night, sealing a 4-3 Trojans win.
Cain was named player of the game for the Trojans after his stellar four-goal performance.
On Saturday, the Vikings came out on top in an 11-goal thriller.
The Trojans jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first.
Kayden Skulmoski opened the scoring two minutes in, with Clark assisting.
Six minutes later, King doubled the lead, with Cain and Brandon Machado picking up assists.
The Vikings answered with two goals of their own.
Eleven minutes into the period, Mikal Chalifoux struck on the power play, and Kaden Kohle added a shorthanded goal with two minutes left, tying the game at 2-2 after 20 minutes.
Early in the second, Chalifoux netted his second of the night to put the Vikings ahead.
Tye Evans made it 4-2 for the Vikings midway through the period.
In the third, Trojans rookie Ryan Neumann scored his third goal of the season to cut the deficit to one.
Less than a minute later, Chalifoux completed his hat trick, restoring the Vikings’ two-goal lead.
After a Jayden Watson roughing penalty put the Trojans on the power play, Brett Butz scored off a Bear assist to start the comeback.
With 1:30 left in regulation, Machado came up clutch, tying the game at 5-5 and forcing overtime.
Chalifoux played the hero for the Vikings, netting his fourth goal of the game to secure the win over the league-leading Trojans.
Next up, the Trojans face rival NAIT Ooks in a pivotal two-game series.
Game 1 is Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:15 p.m. at WinSport Arena, while Game 2 takes place in Edmonton on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m.
Women’s basketball win tenth game in a row, men sweep Kings
After extending their winning streak to eight games with back-to-back wins over the Ambrose Lions last weekend, the Trojans women’s basketball team looked to make it 10 in a row with two matchups against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
Game 1 was Friday, Feb. 15, in Red Deer.
In a close first half, the Trojans led 40-36 at halftime.
They dominated the second half, outscoring the Queens 45-14 to take an 85-50 victory.
Brook Baker shone for the Trojans, recording a game-high 23 points along with five rebounds.
On Saturday, the Trojans faced the Queens at the University of Calgary.
It was another dominant offensive performance from the Trojans.
With an 86-64 win, the Trojans extended their winning streak to 10 games and remained in first place in the ACAC women’s basketball South standings with a 16-1 record.
Next up for the Trojans is a crucial two-game series against the second-place St. Mary’s University Lightning.
Game 1 is Friday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble, with Game 2 on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s University.
After splitting their series with the Lions last weekend, the Trojans men’s basketball team earned two momentum-building wins against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.
Game 1 took place Friday, Jan. 31, in Red Deer.
The Trojans jumped to an early 28-18 lead after the first quarter, with Killian Yopa putting up eight points and three rebounds.
A back-and-forth game saw the Trojans pull away in the fourth quarter to secure a 78-64 win.
Yopa led all scorers with 24 points and added 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, the Trojans and Kings met again at the Jack Simpson Gym at the University of Calgary.
A high-scoring first half saw the Trojans take a 52-42 lead at halftime.
After a strong third quarter from the Kings, the Trojans outscored them 29-16 in the fourth to secure a 96-82 win and complete the weekend sweep.
With two wins, the Trojans move to fourth place in the ACAC men’s basketball South standings with a 10-7 record.
Next up, the Trojans face the Lightning on Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble, followed by a rematch on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s University.
Women’s volleyball sweep Queens, men drop both games against Kings
After opening 2025 with a four-game win streak, the Trojans women’s volleyball team dropped two straight matches to the Ambrose University Lions last weekend.
The Trojans faced the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Friday, Jan. 31, at the SAIT Bubble.
A dominant first set saw the Queens take a 25-13 win.
The Trojans responded by winning the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18.
In the fourth, the Queens battled back to win 25-17 and force a deciding set.
The Trojans’ offence shone in the final frame, securing a 15-8 win to take the match 3-2.
Mila Delaquis led the Trojans with 14 kills in the five-set thriller.
Both teams travelled to Red Deer the next day for a rematch at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
The Trojans dominated Saturday night, sweeping the Queens in three straight sets.
After a strong offensive start with a 25-11 first-set win, the Trojans secured the match with 25-21 and 25-22 victories.
Delaquis once again led the way, recording 11 kills and seven digs.
With the two crucial wins, the Trojans clinched the final playoff spot in the ACAC women’s volleyball South standings.
Next, the Trojans close out the regular season with two games against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
Game 1 is Friday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at Rally Pointe, with Game 2 on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. in Medicine Hat.
It was a confidence-boosting pair of wins over the Lions last weekend as the Trojans men’s volleyball team faced the league-leading Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.
Game 1 was at the SAIT Bubble on Friday, Jan. 31, where the Kings’ attack proved too much to handle.
A tight first set went to the Kings 25-23.
They took full control in the next two sets, winning 25-15 and 25-19 to claim a 3-0 match victory.
Jaxson Thys led the Trojans’ offence with 13 kills on 21 attempts.
On Saturday, the Trojans travelled to Red Deer looking to steal a win.
After dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 25-15, the Trojans fought back to take the third set 25-22.
But the Kings held firm, closing out the match 3-1 with a 25-15 fourth set.
With a 7-10 record, the Trojans sit fifth in the ACAC men’s volleyball South standings.
Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Trojans face the Rattlers on Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. at Rally Pointe before travelling to Medicine Hat the next day for an 8 p.m. matchup at the Snake Pit.
Another strong Trojans badminton display
Men’s singles
The Trojans had three representatives in men’s singles.
First up was Gurmanjot Singh, who faced Sam Couchan of the Concordia University Thunder.
A dominant win to start the day saw Singh advance to the quarterfinals with a 21-12, 21-13 victory.
Andy Nguyen battled Vivek Kodi of The King’s University Eagles in the first round but fell in straight games, 21-13 and 21-10, ending his day.
Ranked third in the tournament, Carl Canillo earned a first-round bye and faced Caelen Mah of the host NAIT Ooks in the quarterfinals.
A 23-21, 21-10 win secured Canillo a spot in the semifinals against second-ranked Smit Patel of the Ooks.
Meanwhile, Singh fell to top-ranked Hossein Ahmadi of the Eagles, 21-18 and 21-12, in the quarterfinals.
In a close semifinal match, Canillo fell to Patel, 21-13 and 21-17, ending his tournament run.
Women’s singles
The Trojans had four representatives in women’s singles.
Astrea Borromeo overcame Anya Caingles of the Ooks in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals against top-ranked Melissa Roque of the Eagles.
Samantha Tran faced Emma Tran of the Thunder in the first round but lost 21-15, 21-14.
Taylor Burton took on Keira Brouwer of the Eagles and earned a dominant 21-5, 21-7 win.
Third-ranked Sienna Pricca had a first-round bye and faced Caitlin Sullivan in the quarterfinals.
Pricca made a strong start, defeating Sullivan 21-5, 21-11 to set up a semifinal clash against second-ranked Khushi Vaniya.
Burton faced Emma Tran in the quarterfinals in a hard-fought match.
After dropping the first game 21-14, Burton bounced back with a 21-18 win, but fourth-ranked Tran sealed the victory with a 21-16 win in the deciding game.
Borromeo struggled against Roque, losing 21-3, 21-5, leaving Pricca as the only Trojans player in the semifinals.
Vaniya advanced to the finals with a 21-17, 21-9 win over Pricca.
Men’s doubles
The Trojans had one team in men’s doubles, featuring Canillo and Paul Ouano.
In the quarterfinals, the Trojans duo defeated Milikias Birhaneb and Kodi of the Eagles, 21-10, 21-5.
In the semifinals, Canillo and Ouano upset the second-ranked Thunder duo of Raphael Motel and Jonathan Su to advance to the finals.
In the final, Hossein Ahmadi and Mahdi Ahmadi of the Eagles proved too strong, defeating Canillo and Ouano 21-15, 21-18.
Women’s doubles
The Trojans had two teams in the women’s doubles tournament.
Top-ranked duo Ziyu Kong and Archelle Ouano faced Brouwer and Sullivan of the Eagles in the quarterfinals and showed their dominance with a 21-9, 21-8 victory.
Burton and Pricca took on Lauryn Psutka and Emma Tran of the Thunder and won 21-17, 21-12.
That set up an all-Trojans semifinal matchup, where Kong and Ouano secured a 21-14, 21-13 win over Burton and Pricca.
In the final, Kong and Ouano continued their winning ways, defeating Noel Do and Samantha Tran of the Ooks 21-12, 21-13 to take first place.
Kong and Ouano will look to continue their dominance at the ACAC badminton championships later this month.
Mixed doubles
The Trojans had three teams competing in mixed doubles.
Nguyen and Borromeo earned a first-round bye.
Singh and Kong faced Ray Wang and Rachel Chan of the Ooks but were defeated in the first round.
Paul and Archelle Ouano also received a first-round bye and matched up against James Pulido and Abigail Wegner of the Eagles in the quarterfinals.
The Ouano duo secured a 21-11, 21-9 victory to move on to the semifinals against Davis Wong and Vaniya of the Ooks.
Meanwhile, Nguyen and Borromeo were eliminated by top-ranked Ahmadi and Roque of the Eagles, 21-8, 21-3.
The Ouano duo battled in a thrilling semifinal match.
They won the first game 28-26 but lost the next two 21-16, 21-13, as Wong and Vaniya advanced to the final, ending the Ouanos' run.
The Trojans had a strong weekend and will look to carry that momentum into the ACAC badminton championships.
The championships begin on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. with the team events.
The individual events start on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m.
The tournament will be hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.
Women’s futsal win four straight, men struggle in first tournament of the season
The Trojans women’s futsal team kicked off their season last Monday with a dominant 6-0 win over the Ambrose Lions.
In the first ACAC women’s futsal tournament of the year, hosted by Lethbridge College, the Trojans went undefeated, winning four straight.
The tournament began on Saturday, Feb. 1, with the Trojans facing the Lethbridge College Kodiaks at 11:30 a.m. and the Medicine Hat College Rattlers at 3:30 p.m.
The Trojans ended the day with a 7-0 win against the Kodiaks and a 5-1 victory over the Rattlers.
On Sunday, the Trojans continued their strong form, shutting out the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 6-0 at 9 a.m. before finishing the weekend with an 8-3 win over the Olds College Broncos at 1:30 p.m.
With four straight wins, the Trojans sit first in the ACAC women’s futsal standings with a 5-0 record, having scored 32 goals while conceding just four.
Next, the Trojans will face the Lions in a rematch on Monday, Feb. 10, at 6:45 p.m. at Ambrose University.
The Trojans men’s futsal team has had a difficult start to the season.
On Monday, Jan. 27, the Trojans lost their season opener to the Lions, 7-4.
The team opened their tournament play on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.
After conceding four goals in the first four minutes, the Trojans struggled to recover, falling 6-1.
Later that afternoon, the Trojans faced the host Lethbridge Polytechnic College Kodiaks.
The Trojans stormed to a 4-0 first-half lead and looked in control, but a second-half comeback by the Kodiaks saw the score cut to 4-3 late in the match.
With just two seconds left, a floated ball into the box slipped through the Trojans keeper’s hands and into the net, tying the game 4-4 and earning both teams a point.
Sunday was a day to forget for the Trojans.
An 8-2 loss to the Rattlers in the morning set the tone for the noon game against the Broncos.
The Trojans fell behind early and couldn’t recover, suffering a 7-3 defeat to close out the weekend.
With three losses and a draw in the tournament, the Trojans sit last in the ACAC men’s futsal South standings with a 0-1-5 record.
Next up, the Trojans will look for redemption in a rematch against the Lions on Monday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. at Ambrose University.
