Women’s hockey extend winning streak to three straight games, men take two straight against the Vikings
After struggles in the first half of the season, the Trojans women’s hockey team extended their winning streak to three games after two shutout wins against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on the weekend.
Game 1 was on Friday, Jan. 24, in Medicine Hat.
After a scoreless first period, Korie McGill and Esther Boelema assisted Jorja Chevalier 14 minutes into the second period to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Just over one minute later, Boelema added a goal of her own to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Boelema capped off her three-point night with an assist to Camryn Karaki for an empty-net goal to seal the 3-0 win for the Trojans on Friday night.
Boelema was awarded player of the game for the Trojans as they travelled home to Calgary to face the Rattlers the next day.
Hosting the Rattlers at WinSport Arena, the Trojans gained another momentum booster when
Mackinley Whalen scored six minutes into the first period to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead.
After Rattlers forward Brooklyn Siemens was assessed a two-minute contact to the head penalty late in the second period, Sydney Hollman made it 2-0 for the Trojans, with Lily Roberts and Kaylan Easson assisting.
Two minutes into the third period, Chevalier added her second goal in as many games, from Aila Wik and Maya Charest, to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, Hollman buried her second goal of the game, from Roberts and Jessa Brewer, to make it 4-0 for the Trojans after two periods.
A scoreless third period saw the Trojans secure the 4-0 win over the Rattlers for a back-to-back win weekend.
With the two wins over the Rattlers, the Trojans improved to 5-12 on the season and sit in fourth place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings.
It was a mixed start to the season for the Trojans men’s hockey team.
Starting the year with three wins and two losses, the Trojans played back-to-back games away at the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25.
On Friday night, the Vikings opened the scoring on the first shift, with Lane Kirk and Jayven Leslie assisting Brayden Koch 28 seconds into the game.
The Trojans responded 13 minutes into the first period. Zach Cain tied the game at 1, with Colby Bear and Reece Richmond assisting.
Four minutes into the second period, Dayvan Bull scored an unassisted goal on the power play to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
Brandon Machado once again tied the game for the Trojans with four minutes left in the second period.
Fifteen minutes into the third period, after a Parker Layton slashing penalty sent the Trojans to the power play, Cain buried his second goal of the night to clinch the 3-2 win.
The two teams played again the next day, with the Vikings aiming for revenge.
With two minutes left in the first period, Machado scored his second goal in as many games on the power play to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Cory King scored an unassisted goal just one minute and 46 seconds into the second period to give the Trojans a two-goal advantage.
Late in the period, Leslie assisted Bull on the power play to cut the deficit to one goal.
In the third period, Dylan Clark added a power-play goal of his own to make it 3-1 for the Trojans. Both Tye Carriere and King recorded assists on the goal.
The Trojans hung on for a 3-1 win to sweep the Vikings on the weekend.
With the two wins, the Trojans remain first in the ACAC men’s hockey standings and clinched a playoff spot.
Next up for the Trojans are two home games against the Portage College Vikings on Friday, Jan. 31, at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
Both games take place at WinSport Arena
Women’s basketball extend winning streak to eight games, men split games with Lions
The Trojans women’s basketball team is the hottest team in the league.
With six straight wins, the Trojans had a two-game matchup against the Ambrose Lions.
Game 1 was on Friday, Jan. 24, at the SAIT Bubble.
A strong first two quarters had the Trojans up 51-28 at halftime.
The Trojans’ offence didn’t slow down, putting up 48 points in the next two quarters to win 89-49.
Trojans forward Vlada Hozalova led the game in points, scoring 21 to go with five rebounds and four steals.
On Saturday, the Lions hosted the Trojans at the Lions Den.
The Trojans’ dominance continued, leading 52-24 at halftime.
Hozalova once again led the game in points, putting up 17 with six rebounds in the 84-48 win against the Lions.
With the two wins over the Lions, the Trojans clinched the first playoff spot in the ACAC women’s basketball South standings.
Next for the Trojans is a two-game matchup against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
Game 1 is Friday, Jan. 31, in Red Deer at 6 p.m., and Game 2 is Saturday, Feb. 1, at the University of Calgary at 1 p.m.
In their last six games, the Trojans men’s basketball team is an even 3-3.
With a win and a loss against the Olds College Broncos to start the new year, and the same results against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks the following weekend, the Trojans once again split games against the Lions.
Game 1 was on Friday night at the SAIT Bubble, with the Trojans’ defence shining.
A 91-75 win, in which Killian Yopa recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Trojans momentum going into Saturday afternoon.
It was an offensive clinic at the Lions Den on Saturday.
A narrow first two quarters had the Trojans leading 48-44 at halftime.
It came down to the very end as the Lions stole the game, winning 96-93 over the Trojans to split the weekend games.
With the win and the loss over the Lions, the Trojans sit tied for fourth with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the ACAC men’s basketball South standings with an 8-7 record.
The Trojans take on the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings in Red Deer on Friday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. and host the Kings the next day at the University of Calgary at 3 p.m.
Women’s volleyball drop two straight against Lions, men keep season alive with two wins
The Trojans women’s volleyball team has been on a roll in 2025.
Since the restart after the winter break, the Trojans haven’t lost a single set in four games.
Back-to-back 3-0 wins against the Olds College Broncos and the Lethbridge College Kodiaks were crucial to the team’s morale.
The Ambrose Lions hosted the Trojans on Friday, Jan. 24, and dominated the game.
A close first set saw the Lions narrowly win 25-22.
Strong offensive performances from the Lions had them take the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-21 to beat the Trojans in straight sets.
Sarah Henriksen led the Trojans’ offence with 11 kills on 23 attempts and was awarded player of the game.
The Lions continued their dominance on Saturday.
A 25-21 win had the Trojans take the first set, but it was all Lions from there.
Winning three straight sets, the Lions snapped the Trojans’ streak with two straight wins.
With the two losses to the Lions, the Trojans drop to fourth place in the ACAC women’s volleyball South standings with a 7-8 record, trailing Briercrest College by two points.
Next for the Trojans women’s volleyball team are two games against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
The Trojans host the Queens at Rally Pointe on Friday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. and travel to Red Deer the next day to face them at 6 p.m.
With four straight losses to start 2025, the Trojans men’s volleyball team gained two confidence-boosting wins against the Lions on the weekend.
On Friday night, the Lions hosted the Trojans at Ambrose University.
A close first set saw the Trojans win 26-24.
In the second set, the Lions’ offence was too strong for the Trojans as they took it 25-18.
The Trojans went on to win the next two sets 25-22 and 25-20 to secure a 3-1 victory over the Lions.
Jaxson Thys had 17 kills for the Trojans on 35 attempts and was awarded player of the game.
On Saturday night, the Trojans hosted the Lions at Rally Pointe.
Just like the previous night, the two teams split the first two sets, with the Trojans winning the first 25-20 and the Lions taking the second 25-17.
Winning the next two sets 25-19 and 25-21, the Trojans earned two crucial wins to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Jonah Deranger led the Trojans’ offence with 16 kills on 23 attempts.
With the two essential wins over the Lions on the weekend, the Trojans are tied for third place in the ACAC men’s volleyball South standings with a 7-8 record.
Awaiting the Trojans this upcoming weekend is a tough matchup against the second-place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, who have only one loss on the season.
The Trojans host the Kings on Friday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. at Rally Pointe and travel to Red Deer the next day for a crucial game at 8 p.m.
Trojans dominate indoor track
In the first ACAC indoor track meet of the year, the Trojans set new ACAC records.
Hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton at the Kinsmen Sport Centre on Saturday, Jan. 25, the Trojans had several athletes competing across all events.
In the women’s 50m, the Trojans had three runners finish in the top five.
Amy Fallows of the Trojans and Eiley Morrison of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens tied for first place, setting a new ACAC record with a time of 6.88 seconds.
Isabel Vega of the Trojans finished in third place, while Meagan Wiebe placed fourth.
In the men’s 50m, the Trojans had four runners in the top 10.
David Adesegun finished second with a time of 6.22 seconds, Andrew Warnick placed fourth at 6.28, Daniel Olufowobi finished seventh at 6.35, and Myles Sonom placed 10th at 6.49.
In the men’s 3000m, the Trojans had two runners finish in the top three.
Nathan Woyessa won the event with a time of 8:43.82.
Following Woyessa was Moktar Said, who finished with a time of 8:46.25.
Both Woyessa and Said were members of the Trojans cross-country team that won both the ACAC cross-country league and the CCAA national championship in November 2024.
In the women’s 4x200m, the Trojans finished third.
Kerigan Frampton, Wiebe, Fallows and Kaie Younger ran for the Trojans, posting a time of 1:55.98.
Fallows also finished first in the women’s 300m with a time of 43.21.
Vega followed in fourth place with a time of 44.25.
Jonah Amper finished eighth in the men’s 300m, posting a time of 39.76.
Finishing just 0.05 seconds behind Amper was Sonom at 39.81.
Frampton won the women’s 600m by over two seconds, finishing with a time of 1:42.17.
In the men’s 600m, the Trojans had three runners finish in the top 10.
Maximus Thiessen won the event with a time of 1:27.71.
Thiessen was also a member of the Trojans cross-country team that won the ACAC and CCAA national championships.
Also representing the Trojans was Silas Iyuke, who finished with a time of 1:30.61.
Following Iyuke was Chase Chambers at 1:30.66.
In the men’s 1500m, Willem Grant finished fourth for the Trojans with a time of 4:35.29.
In the final event of the afternoon, the Trojans placed second in the men’s 4x400m relay.
Thiessen, Said, Woyessa and Grant finished with a time of 3:49.49, four seconds behind the first-place Kodiaks.
The next ACAC Indoor Track Running Room Grand Prix is on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.
Women’s futsal start season strong, men drop chippy game to Lions
After a successful season that included winning the ACAC women’s futsal championship, the Trojans women’s futsal team kicked off their new campaign with a dominant win over the Ambrose University Lions.
A 5-0 victory gave the Trojans their first win of the season ahead of the first ACAC women’s futsal tournament in Lethbridge this weekend.
The Trojans will play four games over the weekend.
Game one is Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11:30 a.m. against the host Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks, followed by game two at 2 p.m. against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
On Sunday, the Trojans start early at 9:15 a.m. against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and wrap up the weekend at 1:15 p.m. against the Olds College Broncos.
The Trojans men’s futsal team endured a tough start to their season.
After conceding four goals in the first three minutes, the Trojans faced an uphill battle against the Lions.
A determined comeback effort fell short, as the Trojans lost 7-5.
The Trojans men’s futsal team will also play four games this weekend.
Game one is Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, followed by game two at 6 p.m. against the host Kodiaks.
The Trojans open Sunday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m. against the Rattlers and finish at 2:30 p.m. against the Broncos.
