Women’s basketball split weekend games against Lakeland and Keyano, Men drop two straight
The Trojans Women’s Basketball team started their season perfectly, winning five straight games.
Their winning streak ended on Friday night as they faced the league-leading, 8-0 Lakeland Rustlers in Lloydminster.
It was a close game at halftime as the Rustlers led 41-39.
After a back-and-forth third and fourth quarter, the Rustlers took a 70-66 victory, handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.
Brook Baker continued her stand-out offensive season for the Trojans, putting up 19 points and three assists in the loss.
The Trojans travelled to Fort McMurray the next day to face the Keyano College Huskies.
A strong first and second quarter had the Trojans up 30-18 at halftime.
Allowing just 27 points over three quarters, the Trojans defence shut down the Huskies.
57-43 was the final score, as the Trojans had a much-needed bounce back after the loss to the Rustlers.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 7-1 on the season and continue to lead the ACAC Women’s Basketball South standings, sitting comfortably in first place.
The next game for the Trojans Women’s Basketball team is Saturday, November 30 as they host the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder at the SAIT bubble at 1:00 p.m.
For the Trojans Men’s Basketball team, it’s been an up-and-down season.
The Trojans lost their opening two games of the season to Briercrest College and bounced back to a four-game winning streak.
It was a tough weekend for the Trojans men, battling the Rustlers in Lloydminster on Friday night.
The Rustlers jumped out to an early 28-15 lead in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game.
At halftime, the Rustlers had a 43-37 lead.
From there, it was all Rustlers, finishing the Trojans off in the third and fourth quarter, taking a 78-68 victory.
Will Tong led the starters in points for the Trojans, scoring 15 points with seven rebounds.
Johnny Mims was also a strong presence for the Trojans. Coming off the bench, Mims had a team-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
Next up for the Trojans men was the ACAC Men’s Basketball North leading Huskies.
The Trojans struggled to put up consistent offensive numbers as they were outscored by the Huskies in every quarter.
The league-leading Huskies put the Trojans away with ease, winning 72-53, handing the Trojans two straight losses on the weekend.
With the two losses, the Trojans Men’s Basketball team sit fourth in the ACAC Men’s Basketball South standings with a 4-4 record.
The Trojans host the Thunder on Saturday afternoon at the SAIT bubble, tip-off is at 3:00 p.m.
Women’s Hockey drop close game to Olds
The Trojans Women’s Hockey team lost a close battle to the Olds College Broncos.
On Thursday, November 21, the Trojans travelled to Olds to face the Broncos, who sit just ahead of the Trojans in the ACAC Women’s Hockey standings.
Lily Roberts scored her first goal of the season and opened the scoring for the Trojans in the first period, with Korie McGill and Drew White recording assists.
The Broncos equalized with two minutes left in the first period through Emerson Stuparyk.
After no scoring in the second period, the Broncos added a power play goal in the third period. Tessa Knisely handed the Trojans their eighth loss of the season.
With the loss, the Trojans drop to 2-8 on the season and sit second last in the ACAC Women’s Hockey standings.
The Next game for the Trojans is on Friday, November 29, as they travel to Edmonton to face the NAIT Ooks at 7:00 p.m.
Trojans dominance in first ACAC Curling tournament of the year
The Trojans had a successful weekend in the first ACAC Curling tournament of the season.
Hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana, the tournament took place from Friday, November 22 to Sunday, November 24.
The Trojans Men’s Curling team finished tied for first place with a 3-1 record.
The Trojans won their first three games, a convincing 10-1 win over the host University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings started their weekend strong.
Two wins against the Red Deer Polytechnic College Kings and the NAIT Ooks had the Trojans at a 3-0 record, looking to go undefeated in the tournament.
The Trojans final game was against the Lakeland College Rustlers, who ended the Trojans hopes of a perfect tournament, taking the game 9-4.
The Trojans’s Women’s Curling team also had a strong start to the tournament, winning a close game 4-3 against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
A 7-5 loss against number one ranked Red Deer College Queens saw the Trojans fall to 1-1.
The Trojans responded by thrashing the Ooks 11-1 and the Vikings 9-2 in their next set of games.
An 8-7 win against the Rustlers ended the weekend for the Trojans with a 4-1 record, finishing second in the ACAC Women’s Curling standings.
Lastly, were the mixed games, with the Trojans dominating the Thunder 10-0 in the opening match.
The Trojans dropped a close match to Red Deer College 4-3 to fall to a 1-1 record.
A 7-0 win against the Portage College Voyagers and a 6-3 win against the Rustlers had the Trojans Mixed Curling team tied for first with a 3-1 record.
The next ACAC Curling tournament goes from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19th, hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.
