Women’s hockey capture big overtime win against Medicine Hat, men win two straight over Augustana
The Trojans Women’s Hockey team have struggled in their first seven games.
To be fair, they have been unlucky. In their one win and six loss record, four losses have been by one goal and two have been overtime losses.
The Trojans took on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers at Winsport Arena, on Friday, November 1.
The first period had no scoring, despite the Trojans outshooting the Rattlers 15 to four.
With five minutes left in the second, Aivry Thomas added the only goal of the period to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
Trojans captain Esther Boelema, scored four minutes into the third period from Drue Schnitzler.
The Rattlers regained the lead two minutes later, Mya Girard netted a goal from Claira Bansley and Mieka Loeppky.
Devon McConnell equalized for the Trojans with three minutes left into the third period to send the game to overtime.
McConnell, scored her team-leading fifth goal in eight games to give the Trojans a 3-2 win over the Rattlers.
The Trojans are now fourth in the ACAC Women’s Hockey standings with a 2-6 record.
McConnell was voted player of the game for the Trojans after scoring the late game-tying goal and the winner in overtime.
The Trojans Men’s Hockey team started their season off strong with a 3-1 record, their only loss coming against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, in overtime.
On Friday, November 1, the Trojans Men’s Hockey team took on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at Winsport Arena.
The Vikings opened the scoring with five minutes left into the first period, Brett Wieschorster scored to make it 1-0, Matt Raymond and Leyton Smith recorded assists.
Dylan Clark added two power-play goals in the second period for the Trojans.
His first came five minutes into the second period from Tanner Gold and Cory King.
Three minutes later, the King and Clark connection shined again. Clark made it 2-1 Trojans with King once again assisting.
Tanner Manz tied the game late in the period for the Vikings from Lane Kirk and Raymond’s second assist of the night.
After the third period saw no scoring, Tanner Gold won the game for the Trojans in overtime.
Clark was voted player of the game for the Trojans with two goals.
The next day, the rematch between the Trojans and the Vikings had the Trojans take a commanding 4-1 win.
Colby Bear scored early into the first period with Gold as the loan assist.
Clark scored his third goal in two games with assists from Cooper Algajer and Gold to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Zach Cain scored his fourth goal of the season with Reece Richmond assisting.
Richmond added a second assist in the period when Colby Call made it 4-0 Trojans at the end of the second.
Jacob Biensch scored for the Vikings one minute into the third period to end the shutout chances for the Trojans.
With the win, the Trojans stay in first place in the ACAC Men’s Hockey standings with a 5-1 record.
Women’s volleyball drop two straight games, men improve to 3-1
The Trojans Women’s Volleyball team had a rough start to their season, losing their two opening games against Briercrest and looking to bounce back against the King's University Eagles.
On Friday, November 1, the Trojans travelled to Edmonton to face the Eagles.
The Trojans dropped three straight sets to the Eagles and lost their opening game of the weekend 3-0.
Mia Delaquis and Grace Florence led the offence for the Trojans, Delaquis had six kills and Grace Florence had six aces.
The Trojans looked to bounce back the next day as they travelled to Grand Prairie to face the Northwestern Polytechnic College Wolves.
After the Wolves took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22, the Trojans rallied to win the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-14.
The fifth set was close, but the Wolves dug deep and found the edge over the Trojans 15-12 to win the game 3-2.
The Trojans Women’s Volleyball team now sit second last in the ACAC Women’s Volleyball standings with a 0-4 record.
The next game for the Trojans is on Friday, November 8, at 6:00 p.m. where they take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at Rally Pointe.
The Trojans Men’s Volleyball team looked to carry their momentum after a 3-1 win last weekend at Briercrest College in their second game of the season.
On Friday night, in Edmonton, The Trojans men took on the first-place Eagles, who won their opening two games.
In the first two sets, the Trojans took a 25-18 and 25-15 victory over the Eagles.
The third set was all Eagles, taking the set 25-18.
A 25-20 fourth set had the Trojans take a 3-1 victory over the Eagles, with Jaxson Thys recording 10 kills and Alex Liao-Mcpherson recording 10 aces for the Trojans.
On Saturday, the Trojans men took on the Wolves in Grand Prairie.
The teams split the first two sets, the Trojans winning the first set, 25-20 and the Eagles winning the second set, 25-23.
The Wolves won the third set 25-21, but the Trojans would rally and win the fourth set to force a fifth set.
A dramatic fifth set had the Trojans come away with a 15-12 victory, winning their second game in as many days and improving their record to 3-1 on the season.
The Trojans Men’s Volleyball team are next in action on Friday, November 8, at 8:00 p.m. where they take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at Rally Pointe.
Men’s and women’s basketball teams have perfect weekend
The Trojans Women’s Basketball team started their season perfectly, winning convincing back-to-back games against Briercrest College.
On Friday, November 1, the Trojans faced the King’s University Eagles at SAIT.
After the first quarter was even at 19-19, the Trojans led by two points at halftime.
The Trojans outscored the Eagles in the third quarter 13-11 and set up a close fourth quarter.
Aneilia Ayotte had six points in the fourth quarter for the Eagles, which wasn’t enough to secure the win, as the Trojans beat the Eagles, 59-57.
Kitawna Sparks led the game in scoring for the Trojans with 17 points, shooting 8-11.
A double-double from Anegor Wol with 11 points and 10 rebounds was another standout for the Trojans in a close game.
The Trojans faced the Northwester Polytechnic College Wolves the next day at SAIT.
In the first and second quarters, the Trojans were outstanding on both sides of the court and led 46-6 at halftime.
The third and fourth quarter was all Trojans, scoring another 58 points to secure a 92-23 victory over the Wolves.
Once again, Sparks led the game in points, scoring 19 on the Wolves with nine rebounds, six being offensive.
The Trojans bench played a massive part in the win. Kyler Varga played 21 minutes and scored eight points off the bench.
With the two wins on the weekend, the Trojans women sit comfortably in first place in the ACAC Women’s Basketball standings with a 4-0 record.
The Trojans Women’s Basketball team travel to Camrose to face the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Friday, November 8, at 6:00 p.m.
For the Trojans Men’s Basketball team, they aimed to bounce back after dropping their opening two games to Briercrest College.
The Trojans opened their weekend on Friday night against the Eagles.
After a 44-24 first quarter, the rest of the game was all Trojans, scoring 24 in the second quarter and 26 in the third quarter to earn a 114-81 victory over the Eagles, setting a new season high in points scored.
Awer Awer was the standout performer for the Trojans, scoring a game-high 25 points off the bench.
The next day, the Trojans took on the Wolves at the University of Calgary.
After gaining a 40-28 lead in the second quarter, the Trojans saw the game out and picked up their second win in as many games as they knocked off the Wolves 91-62.
Marcus Masters had a game-high 28 points as the Trojans offence continues to put up stellar numbers.
With the two wins, the Trojans move up to fifth place in the South division of the ACAC Men’s Basketball standings.
The Trojans Men’s Basketball team travel to Camrose to face the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Friday, November 8, at 8:00 p.m.
