On Saturday, September 14th, the Trojans men's and women's soccer took on the Ambrose Lions at Cohos Commons Field.
First up was the women's team, off the back of a perfect six-point weekend and ranking fourth in the CCAA.
It took the Trojans women 17 minutes to break through the Lions in the first half.
Ashley Bowman’s cross into the 18-yard box was controlled by Rachelle O’Leary, who slotted the ball past the Lions keeper to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, Nikki Charlton had a shot on goal that slipped through the hands of the Lions keeper and into the back of the net.
The Trojans women would add two more goals through Olivia Depasquale and Charlton to take a commanding 4-0 lead in the first half.
In the second half, Meaghan Wiebe netted her fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute off a rebound spilled by the Lions keeper.
Isabelle Vega and Tiona Paton would add two more for the Trojans in the 55th and 63rd minute to make it 7-0.
The Lions would get one goal on the day from Anna Langill in the 76th minute.
O'Leary then weaved through half of Ambrose's defence, delivering the game's final goal into the bottom corner to cement the Trojans' 8-1 win.
O’Leary was named player of the match with two goals and one assist.
On the men’s side, the Trojans’ only game of the weekend was a hard-fought battle until the final whistle.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Tes David's brilliant long pass found Ryusei Ito on the left wing, who slotted it into the near post for his second goal of the season.
In the 37th minute, Ito was fouled in the box, and Brock Mitchell's penalty kick struck the post, extending the Trojans streak of missed penalties to three straight games.
Mitchell’s missed penalty proved to be a turning point, giving the Lions a boost of momentum heading into halftime.
The Lions equalized in the 57th minute off former SAIT player Antonio Hernandez, who sent Trojans keeper Teo Greco the wrong way on a penalty kick, levelling the game at one.
The Trojans would score the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute. Super sub Finn Leblanc took a perfect long ball from Carter Hunter and squared it across the box, where Brock Mitchell recorded his fourth goal in three games.
Mitchell also got his league-leading fifth goal in the 90th minute off a spilled rebound from the Lions keeper to secure the three points for the Trojans, ending the game at 3-1.
Leblanc was named player of the match for the Trojans after coming off the bench and providing two assists in as many games.
When asked about the match, Leblanc said, "It was definitely an important game for us to get a result. Ambrose came into the game hungry which was apparent early on."
Leblanc also commented on his recent form, providing a goal and three assists over three games, "It feels good to be able to contribute to the team in the way I have so far," he said. "Hopefully I can maintain it as the season progresses," he added.
