Trojan teams in good shape after Day 1
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Sept. 14, 2019) — It was a good day for the SAIT Trojans golf team.
Competing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Regionals at Redtail Landing Golf Club in Edmonton, the Trojans see their men's team atop the leaderboard after Day 1, while their women's team sit in second.
"Absolutely happy with how we played today," said Trojans head coach, Stephen Yanitski. "We got exactly what we needed from our men's and women's team, and there's still some room for improvement. Each of them would tell you they left some shots out there today. We're looking forward to tomorrow."
On the men's side, Curtis Webster (1st year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) led the charge with a 1-under 71 on the day. He now sits in fourth spot and just two shots off the lead, as University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings golfer Michael Harrison carded a 3-under 69 to sit atop the men's individual standings.
"Curtis had an awesome day; established a new tournament-low for himself," Yanitski said. "He's showing everyone why we brought him into this program. . . He brings deep tournament experience to the table, and he was comfortable from the first tee shot on today."
Teammate Matthew Cook (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration) fired an even par 72 to sit in fifth spot. Dakota Smith (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) shot a 2-over 74 to sit tied for seventh, and Jared Wylie (1st year, Tumbler Ridge, BC, EMT – Paramedic) recorded a 5-over 77 to sit in 14th place.
Altogether, the four have SAIT sitting with a combined score of 6-over and sit in top spot. Augustana finds themselves in second place at 9-over, while the host MacEwan Griffins find themselves in third place at 10-over.
"The message on the bus was to keep their heads on, as there is still another round in this tournament," explained Yanitski. "I reminded them that we are in this position now because of all the hard work and preparation we have put in leading up to this, so we need to stay focused."
On the women's side, SAIT's Carey McLean (1st year, Deer Valley, Sask., Travel and Tourism) sits in a tie for second place after her 11-over 83.
Karmen Mooney (5th year, Squamish, BC, Construction Project Management) edged both her golf and hockey teammate Tashel Scantlebury (5th year, Foxwarren, Man., Community Economic Development) by one stroke with an 89 to sit in fifth spot.
"Having Carey tied for second, and all of our women in the top six is amazing to see," Yanitski stated. "In Carey's case, she has had a bit of an adjustment period in moving provinces and getting used to her new environment, and that's to be expected. Today, however, she came ready to play and was dealing right from the start."
In the women's team event, just two scores count, so McLean and Mooney's combined 28-over par have them in second place behind Concordia's 17-over heading into Sunday's final round.
