Trojans tighten up D in win over Broncos
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 24, 2020) - Attention to defence helped the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team Friday night.
After being reminded that taking care of things on the defensive side of the ball, the Trojans offence ran wild in a 101-71 victory over the Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"Our team starts with our defence, and if we're taking the ball out of our net all the time, it's not very good for us," said Trojans head coach Marty Birky. "They came out firing, they hit shots. We got a little more aggressive on defence and turned them over and got the ball back."
SAIT sees their record move to 10-3 on the season. Olds College falls to 1-11.
The start of the game saw the visiting Broncos start off hot, getting 13 points from Landon Parrington to take a 30-25 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
After that, it was all SAIT, as the Trojans outscored the Broncos 27-12 in the second to take a 52-42 lead into halftime. Eleven of those 27 points came from guard Calvin Chambers (4th year, Memphis, Tenn., Business Administration).
Chambers went on to score a team-high 21 points, while adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Teammate Charlie Conner (3rd year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) nearly recorded a triple-double, recording 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
In the second half, SAIT's defence continued to keep Olds at bay, allowing just 29 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
Alec Hilman led the Broncos with 24 points.
The Trojans return to action next week against the undefeated Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Thursday night at home in an 8pm tip-off.
