Trojans edged by Ooks
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Oct. 12, 2019) — Another night, another tough one-goal loss for the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team.
The Trojans were beaten 4-3 Saturday night by the host NAIT Ooks in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played in Edmonton. The loss comes 24 hours after NAIT handed SAIT a 3-2 overtime defeat.
"The message to the guys after the game was pretty clear – NAIT is supposed to be one of the favourites in this league and we didn't look out of place at all against them," said Trojans head coach, Tyler Drader. "This is a tough league, and there are going to be a lot of one-goal games, I suspect. We just have to find ways to be on the right side of them."
SAIT falls to 0-1-1 on the season. NAIT moves to 2-0.
A wild first period saw the teams combine for five goals, with the Ooks holding a 3-2 advantage over the Trojans after 20 minutes of play.
Scoring for NAIT was Tanner Younghans, Jake Mykitiuk and Brendan Lawson.
Replying for SAIT was Eric Krienke (3rd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) and Tyler Maltby (2nd year, Sherwood Park, Alta., Business Administration).
NAIT scored their fourth of the game (Colton Waltz) midway through the second period, ending the night for SAIT goalie Cody Campbell (2nd year, Dewinton, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration), who allowed four goals on 20 shots.
Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) replaced Campbell and picked up where he left off after Friday's strong performance, turning aside all 29 shots he faced in 30+ minutes of work to keep his team in the game.
"He kept the ship upright, for sure," Drader said of Dumba. "He made the saves he needed to make, and gave us a chance to win."
Down 4-2 after two periods, SAIT needed something to go their way. They got it just 13 seconds into the third when Cory Santoro (3rd year, Kelowna, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) flew down the wing and beat NAIT goalie Jordan Papirny to cut the lead to one.
That's as close as they would get, however, as the Ooks shut the door the rest of the way.
"I liked our push back, and how we fought our way back into the game," Drader finished. "Going forward, if we can compete like the way we did tonight, we'll win more than we lose."
SAIT will look to put a tick in the win column next weekend, when they play two home games against the visiting Briercrest College Clippers – Friday night at 7pm, Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
