Dumba helps Trojans to shutout victory
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 23, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans men's hockey team picked up two very different wins this weekend.
After scoring eight times on Friday night, the Trojans needed just three on Saturday to shut out the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 3-0 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played inside SAIT Arena.
"That's hockey for you; you never know what you're going to get on any given night, said Trojans head coach Tyler Drader, whose team beat the Vikings 8-5 the night before. "We can play a lot of different ways. We're big, we're strong, we're fast. We can play a skill game or we can grind it out.
"We have different ways to beat you, but it's just a matter of cleaning up some things and not giving up so many odd man rushes and taking unnecessary penalties."
SAIT moves to 6-3-1-2 on the year, while the Vikings fall to 4-8.
Helping the Trojans on the night was the play of netminder Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration), who stopped all 37 shots he faced to record his first ACAC shutout.
"I thought he was very sharp tonight," explained Drader. "He made a couple of nice cross-crease saves. . . A couple of times where we got a little scrambley in the second period, he was able to keep them at bay."
After a scoreless first period, the Trojans got the only goal they needed in the second period when captain Colton McCarthy (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC, Geographic Information Systems) came out of the penalty box, joined the play, and scored his second goal of the weekend.
Parker Evans-Campbell (4th year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) potted a breakaway goal nearly four minutes later to give SAIT a 2-0 lead going into the final period.
In the third, Joren Patenaude (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) went end to end before circling the net and stuffing the puck home to round out the scoring.
Augustana had plenty of chances of their own, including two lengthy 5-on-3 power play opportunities that the Trojans did a good job of killing.
"We've really been working on being aggressive," Drader said. "And it wasn't like it was 5-on-3's for a couple of seconds, those were well over a minute. It was great to see us do a good job of holding them on their entries, we won some face-offs that were key, and Dumba made a couple of big saves too."
The Trojans return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Red Deer College Kings.
