Northover goes back-to-back
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 25, 2018) — Dean Northover has done it again.
The SAIT Trojans men's soccer player was named the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Year on Thursday night, repeating the same feat he achieved last season.
He was presented with the award during the Conference Championship banquet at SAIT.
"Dean is an incredible talent that brings so much to the table," says Trojans head coach, Connor Brady. "Along with being selfless a leader on our team, his positive attitude and willingness to hold his teammates accountable makes our team that much stronger."
Northover becomes the first player to win the award in consecutive seasons since Kyle Yamada did so in 2008 as a member of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and then again in 2009 as a member of the Mount Royal University Cougars.
The third-year Graphic Communications and Print Technology student from Calgary played a big part in his team going a perfect 12-0 this season to finish atop the ACAC's South Division standings.
He led the Trojans with 11 goals on the season, many of which came because of his amazing work ethic.
Northover's Trojans earned a bye into the semifinal of this weekend's Conference Championship, which will be played Saturday morning against the winner of Friday's quarter-final matchup between the Red Deer College Kings and Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
Trojans named to South Division All-Conference Teams
A trio of SAIT Trojans were lauded Thursday night at the ACAC Men's and Soccer Championship banquet for their hard work this past season.
Midfielders Dean Northover (3rd year, Calgary, Graphic Communications and Print Technology) and Johnny Hutchinson (3rd year, Ottawa, Ont., Graphic Communications and Print Technology), as well as defender Jordan Alvarez (4th year, Calgary, Library Information Technology) were named as ACAC South Division All-Conference selections after successful seasons on the field.
This is the second selection in as many seasons for Northover, who was also named the ACAC's Men's Soccer Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Northover scored 11 goals in 12 games this season, but is known league-wide for how tough he is to knock him off the ball. On the defensive side, his aggressive play helps him come out on the winning side of most battles.
This is the first ACAC All-Conference award for Hutchinson, who just joined the Trojans this season.
His tough and physical style of play has helped keep opposing teams into SAIT's defensive third. In addition to a powerful right foot, Hutchinson reads the game well and has shown an ability to be in the right spot at the right time.
This is the first ACAC All-Conference award for Alvarez, now in his fourth season at SAIT.
Alvarez has been described as 'tough as nails' defender with a willingness to get stuck into a tackle. A vocal leader, he can be heard shouting directions to teammates across the field.
