Trojans move to 3-0 with win over Rustlers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 15, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team continues to win.
On Saturday, the home team blanked the Lakeland College Rustlers 3-0 in their chilly Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at Cohos Commons Field.
“The first half we tried to go long too much, but once we started playing with each other, it started opening Lakeland up,” said Trojans assistant Daniel Broadhurst.
SAIT moves to 3-0 on the season, while Lakeland falls to 0-1-1.
The Trojans started the scoring just 15 minutes into the contest when Jake Walmsley (5th year, Cranbrook, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) netted his first of the season.
As the first half drew to a close, the game started getting physical. It came to a head when Lakeland’s Duncan McNaughton was given a red card, leaving his team with just 10 men for the entire second half of the game.
He spoke with his team at half about the need to stay cool and resist the urge to retaliate.
“We’re taking it as a compliment; you’re going to get hacked if you’re a higher-calibre player,” Broadhurst added. “Yeah, it sucks getting hacked, but our team spirit is high and we all know we need to stay focused on the game plan.”
SAIT did not wait long to capitalize on the man-advantage, as Armando Garcia (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Graphic Communications and Print Technology) scored just three minutes into the second half to double his team’s lead.
Dean Northover (3rd year, Calgary, Graphic Communications and Print Technology) scored his second of the season at the 75th minute to cement the win.
The Trojans will return to action tomorrow at 2pm when they will welcome the Red Deer College Kings.
