Trojans fall to Kings in four
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 31, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team suffered a setback Friday night.
The Trojans battled hard for three sets, and then seemed to run out of steam in the fourth as they fell 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16) to the visiting Red Deer College Kings in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT.
"We stopped competing in the fourth and stopping playing intelligent volleyball," said Trojans head coach Dallas Soonias in a brief post-game interview.
SAIT falls to 16-5 on the season, while Red Deer improves to 13-4.
After dropping the opening set, the Trojans seemed to settled into the game, taking the second set quite handily.
A tight third-set was marred when Trojans setter Maddux Greves (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) left the game late in the set with an undisclosed lower body injury.
Rookie setter Andrew Seguin (1st year, Sturgeon County, Alta., Power Engineering Technology) came in and played well, but the rest of the team seemed to be affected by Greves' injury.
A fourth set was played, but SAIT did not put up much of a fight in it, as the Kings dominated it from start to finish to cement the win.
Trojans outside Riley Grusing (3rd year, Calgary, Civil Engineering Technology) led his team with 21 kills.
The Kings received 14 kills and two service aces from Patrik Toze in the win.
SAIT and Red Deer will wrap up their weekend set Saturday night in Red Deer in an 8pm start.
