Trojans dominate the boards in win over Lions
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 21, 2019) - Make it two in a row for the SAIT Trojans women's basketball team.
The Trojans had three players record double-doubles, as they beat the host Ambrose University Lions 76-71 on Thursday night in an all-Calgary Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) matchup.
"It really was all how we came out in the second half and started shooting the ball with confidence," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar, whose team shot 20 per cent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, and 57 per cent in the last 20 minutes. "We came out after the break with a different attitude, and things changed. We had the same shots we did in the first, but in the second half it didn't matter who it was, everything started falling for us."
SAIT moves to 3-4 on the season, while Ambrose falls to 1-7.
The Trojans now have wins in back-to-back games for the first time this year. Despite losing last Friday night to the Briercrest College Clippers, the decision was reversed and SAIT was handed a 2-0 forfeit win after Briercrest revealed that they had an ineligible player on their bench.
While Parmar joked if he can call what they're on a winning streak, he did not joke around about the amazing performance of post Rachel Osczevski (2nd year, Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles).
She had a monster game for the Trojans, scoring 16 points while adding 22 rebounds - just two short of the all-time ACAC single-game mark of 24.
"She dominated inside," Parmar said bluntly. "And thankfully, she put herself into a position where she could play continuous minutes later in the game after getting into foul trouble early on."
Richina Foggo (4th year, Calgary, Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles) added 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Lauren Bailey (4th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) chipped in with 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Munroe Brothers led the Lions with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Parmar's team will now carry a lot of confidence into Saturday night's contest against a very tough Olds College Broncos team who sit in first place in the ACAC South Division with a 5-1 record.
"We're going into a battle," he said. "It's going to really show where we are guts-wise, and hopefully we bring some of tonight's game into Saturday night."
