Trojans fight hard in loss to Broncos
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 24, 2020) - SAIT Trojans women's head coach Bir Parmar got the effort he wanted. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
The Trojans were beaten Friday night on their home floor, 69-49 by the Olds College Broncos in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"When you take the first quarter out of the game, it's basically even," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Effort-wise, I have nothing to get on them about. When it comes down to it, if we make fewer mistakes and don't give them as many easy buckets it could have been a different result. But missing 15 free throws and taking silly fouls against a team like that comes back to bite you."
SAIT falls to 3-10 on the season. Olds College moves to 11-1.
In the opening quarter, Olds looked every bit the first place team they are by taking it to the Trojans right off the opening jump.
By the time the first quarter ended, the visitors had amassed a 26-13 lead - with nine of those points coming from star Brittney Thibeaux.
The last time Thibeaux played in the SAIT gym, she set the ACAC single-game scoring record with 61 points.
On Friday, however, the Trojans held her to just 11 points in the final three quarters as she finished with 20.
The rest of the game saw SAIT outscored just 43-36, as they battled the Broncos hard.
"And it wasn't just our starters, but names you don't necessarily see on the scoresheet that were making a difference," Parmar added.
Leading SAIT on the night was Anegor Wol (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Journalism) with 15 points.
The Trojans return to action next week with one game, Thursday night at home against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks at 6pm.
