Trojans bit by Rattlers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 21, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team made it close, but could not make enough baskets when it mattered most.
The Trojans played host to Medicine Hat College Rattlers in their final home game of their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season, and fell 62-56.
"We had opportunities, but didn't finish at the end," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Ultimately, we gave ourselves a shot despite being shorthanded."
SAIT falls to 5-13 on the season, while Medicine Hat improves to 10-10.
Despite being out of playoff contention, the Trojans battled hard all game long, which is all Parmar wants as his team close out the season.
"Whether it's playoffs or not, we tell our team that they play for the name on front of the jersey," he said. "And if they don't have the ability to play with pride then they are wearing the wrong uniform."
The Trojans started well enough, outscoring their guests 18-13 in the opening quarter.
Med Hat returned the favour in the second quarter, outscoring SAIT 18-9 to take a 31-27 into half time.
The second half saw the teams trade baskets back and forth, but SAIT could not do enough to take back the lead.
"We've had to overcome a lot of injuries this year," Parmar stated. "We are starting to come together, but we are months behind in our development."
Rachel Osczevski had a big game for the Trojans, scoring a game high 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
Rhiannon Ware paced the Rattlers with 16 points and six rebounds.
SAIT will finish off this weekend Saturday night in Medicine Hat, Alta., before wrapping up their season with two road games against the host Briercrest College Clippers in Caronport, Sask.
