Trojan women go 2-0, men 0-1 on Day 1
LETHBRIDGE, ALTA, (March 15, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans men's and women's futsal teams had mixed results in their first day of competition at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal Championships.
The women went 2-0, garnering wins over Lakeland College (5-2) and the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (8-1); while the men lost their only game of the day 3-0 to The King's University Eagles.
"We're not only elated with the two 'W's', but that we got them despite not getting into our groove until the second half of our second game," said Trojans women's coach John Talerico. "We are happy to get off the ground with some good results."
The women will conclude their round robin tomorrow with two more games against Ambrose University at 9:45am, and Lethbridge College at 5pm.
"We need to continue to use the momentum we gained today," Talerico said about what will be key on Saturday. "If we play as well defensively as we did today, and score like we did, we should be alright."
On the men's side, Trojans head coach Connor Brady was not thrilled with his team's performance.
"King's defended us well, I'll give them that much," he said following the game. "But, our movement off the ball needs to be significantly better. We just had too many spectators and passengers on the field. That's just not good enough for us, because at this level, no one is giving us anything just because we're SAIT."
They will play now twice on Saturday, beginning with an 11am showdown with Keyano College and ending with 6:15pm game against Lakeland College.
SAIT will need wins in both of those games if they hope to play in Sunday's
"It's not so much about playing harder more than it is playing smarter," Brady said about his message to his team."
