Trojans done in by rough start
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 9, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team continues to struggle.
The Trojans spotted the visiting Red Deer College Queens three goals before getting on the board themselves with 61 seconds left in the game, as they fell 3-1 on Friday night at SAIT Arena.
"We were down 2-0 after the first, which I think was probably one of our worst periods this season," said Trojans head coach, Kelsey Leifson. "There was no energy, no nothing."
SAIT falls to 1-8 on the season. Red Deer improves to 3-4.
Red Deer's Kaely McMurtry inflicted all the damage to the Trojans, scoring two goals in the opening period, and then finishing off the hat trick in the second period.
Shea Dolan (3rd year, Rimbey, Alta., Business Administration) scored SAIT's lone goal late in the game to ruin the shutout bid by Red Deer goalie Karlee Fetch.
The final 20 minutes saw the Trojans push hard to try get back into the game. It's that effort that Leifson will be keying on as they teams wrap up their weekend set tomorrow night back in Red Deer at 7pm.
"I thought in the third period we really stepped up, and there were players who showed they want to be leaders and want to be on the ice more," Leifson said. "We hope we can build off the confidence we showed in that final period when we go to their barn tomorrow."
