Trojans find scoring touch in win over Broncos
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 12, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team were due for a big game, and it finally arrived.
The Trojans put a season-best six goals on the scoreboard on Saturday night, beating the visiting Olds College Broncos 6-3 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played at SAIT Arena. The goal output was a bit of a surprise, as the Trojans were blanked 2-0 by this same Broncos team just two nights ago in Olds, Alta.
The six goals were the most the Trojans have scored in over a year, last achieving the feat on Jan. 5, 2018 in a 6-5 overtime win over MacEwan University.
The Trojans improve to 3-11 on the year. Olds College falls to 5-8-1.
SAIT started especially well, scoring the first three goals of the game.
The first came in the opening period when Brittany MacDonald (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) scored her first of two on the night.
Ashton Holmes (2nd year, Bassano, Alta., Academic Upgrading) and Kelsey Patterson (1st year, Castlegar, BC, Business Administration) made it 3-0 in a matter of 21 seconds.
Olds College cut the lead to 3-1 just 22 seconds after Patterson's marker when Taeya Nicol beat Trojans netminder Kaylin Schellenberg (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration).
Broncos forward Jesse Jack cut the lead to one four minutes later, before Patterson scored short-handed for her second of the game to put SAIT up 4-2 going into the final period.
In the third, Olds started things by cutting the lead to one when Tori Chenier scored on the power play.
After that, SAIT closed the door.
Scotia Bellavance (4th year, Campbell River, BC, Business Administration) scored with five minutes left, and MacDonald potted an empty-net marker with 1:16 to ice the win.
The Trojans return to action next weekend with a home-and-home set against Red Deer College – Friday at Red Deer at 7pm, Saturday night back at SAIT at 7pm.
