Trojans eek out road win against Broncos
OLDS, ALTA, (Feb. 7, 2019) — It wasn't easy, but the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team got the two points.
In a penalty-filled affair, the Trojans scored goals in each period en route to a 3-2 win over the host Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.
The victory moves SAIT's record to 5-13 on the season. Olds College falls to 6-12-1.
Olds College scored first on Thursday night, when Tori Chenier beat Trojans goalie Elisha Oswald (3rd year, Waldersee, Man., Health Information Management).
SAIT tied things up shortly after when Kelsey Patterson (1st year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign on a breakaway.
In the second period, the Trojans took their first lead of the game when Tashel Scantlebury (4th year, Foxwarren, Man., Civil Engineering Technology) scored on the power play from the hashmarks to go up 2-1.
The home team tied things up in the third period as the Trojans were killing a penalty. Bree Edwards banged in a rebound from in close to even the game with less than six minutes left.
SAIT responded well, getting a goal on the very next shift when Emma Wheeldon (2nd year, Nelson, BC, Business Administration) finished off a 2-on-1 with her first of the season.
The marker turned out to be the game-winner, despite late pressure from the Broncos, who finished the game on a two-man advantage after pulling goalie Lexi Bruce.
Oswald finished the game with 29 saves. Bruce made 30 stops.
The teams will finish their weekend set Saturday night at SAIT. Should the Trojans find a way to earn their first sweep of the season, they would pull within one point of the Broncos for the fourth and final playoff spot available.
