Trojans drop nail biter against Queens
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 26, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team have to feel like they're close.
For the second straight night, the Trojans fell by just one goal, losing 4-3 to the visiting Red Deer College Queens Saturday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT Arena. The Trojans lost by the same count to the same Queens team just 24 hours earlier.
The loss keeps the Trojans winless on the season (0-4).
Despite never leading in the game, the Trojans would not go away, either.
After Red Deer's Mary Hirsch opened the scoring in the first period, SAIT's Karys Woodward (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) replied less than two minutes later to tie it up.
The Queens would take back the lead late in the period when Neisha Germann beat Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration).
SAIT replied with the only goal in the second period when veteran Karmen Mooney (5th year, Squamish, BC, Construction Project Management) scored with less than three minutes remaining in the frame.
In the final 20 minutes, the Queens took control of the game when Tyra Anderson and Hirsch scored 14 minutes apart to take a 4-2 lead.
Just 34 seconds after Hirsch's second of the game, however, SAIT drew a goal closer when Davina McLeod (4th year, Aklavik, NWT, Business Administration) beat Queens goalie Karlee Fetch.
That's as close as they would get however, as the Queens ran out the rest of the clock to pick up the victory.
SAIT will look to earn their first win of the season next weekend when they take on the NAIT Ooks in a home-and-home series - Friday in Edmonton, and Saturday back at home.
