SAIT falls at home to MacEwan
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 1, 2020) - Building off a narrow loss Friday night was not in the cards for the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team.
The Trojans played host to the three-time defending Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) champion MacEwan Griffins on Saturday. And while they were edged by just one goal the night before, SAIT fell 6-1 in the rematch played inside Trojans Arena.
SAIT falls to 4-13-1 on the season. MacEwan improves to a league-best 17-3.
Down 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play thanks to a Morgan Casson goal, the Trojans looked to get back into the game in the second period.
However, Griffins forward Shyla Jans had other plans, scoring two goals just 11 seconds apart to triple her team's lead.
Jans' first was not without controversy, however, as the Trojans argued that goaltender Cassidy Brown (1st year, Calgary, Health Fundamentals) took some contact from the Griffins that pulled her out of her net and prevented her from making a play on the puck.
The arguing bore no fruit, and despite Jans adding another 11 seconds after, the Trojans did not roll over.
Less than a minute after the Griffins' third goal, SAIT cut into the lead thanks to a marker from Kelsey Patterson (2nd year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology).
Patterson's ninth of the season would be it for the Trojans on the night, as MacEwan added three more the rest of the way - Jans scored her third of the night, Casson her second while Amanda Murray also tallied.
Jans also added a pair of assists for a five point night.
SAIT will look to climb back into a playoff spot next weekend when they take on the Red Deer College Queens in a home-and-home series - Friday night on the road, Saturday night at home.
