Late goal sinks Trojans
RED DEER, ALTA., (Feb. 7, 2020) - Friday's loss was a tough one to swallow for the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team.
After more than 59 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Trojans allowed a short-handed goal with just 35 seconds left to fall 1-0 to the host Red Deer College Queens Friday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game.
"That one was heartbreaking coming up on the short side of a one-goal game again," said Trojans captain Tashel Scantlebury (5th year, Foxwarren, Man., Community Economic Development). "We played a great, though. Just need to bare down with our opportunities. We've learnt from this and have moved on as a team."
The loss sends the Trojans' record to 4-14-1 on the season, keeping them two points back of the Olds College Broncos for the fourth and final playoff spot available.
Red Deer College sits in second place with a 13-4-2 mark.
On the power play late in the game thanks to a Neisha Germann penalty for bodychecking, SAIT looked to take advantage and score the game's only goal.
They had a few shots on net on the power play, but turned over the puck at the blue line, allowing Avery Lajeunnesse to go in on a breakaway and squeak one past Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration).
Schellenberg and her counterpart, Karlee Fetch, both played solid in net. Between the two, they stopped 47 of 48 shots fired their way.
The Trojans will turn their attention to Saturday night, as they try exact a measure of revenge on the Queens at home in a 7pm puck drop.
"Tomorrow is a new day, and we are ready to get this 'W' for each other," Scantlebury finished. "These girls deserve it."
