Trojans come up short against Queens
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 8, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team pushed hard late, but came up short.
For the second-straight night, the Trojans were handed a one-goal loss, this one a 2-1 decision against the visiting Red Deer College Queens in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
"We just have to keep playing like this, and hopefully the goals will come," said Trojans head coach Tom Molloy, whose team fired 20 shots on net in the final period. "The first part is to play well, and we're doing that. Now we just need someone to put that puck in the net."
SAIT falls to 4-15-1, and remain outside of a playoff spot with just four games remaining in the regular season. They currently sit two points behind the fourth place Olds College Broncos - who they will finish the year against two weeks from now.
Red Deer, who received a short-handed goal with 35 seconds left in the game to win 1-0 over SAIT on Friday, move to 14-4-2.
The Trojans scored the lone goal of the opening period on Saturday when Brittany MacDonald (3rd year, Calgary, Medical Radiologic Technology) jammed in a loose puck on the power play at the 9:59 mark.
Red Deer replied with two of their own in the second period. The first came when Camryn Wallan was sent in on a breakaway and beat Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) top shelf to tie the game.
Their second came right as the buzzer went when Tessa Ross floated a shot on net that Schellenberg appeared to not see off the stick.
In the final period, SAIT came out flying and put pressure on the Queens. That pressure remained all period, but the Trojans could not beat the Queens netminder, Karlee Fetch.
"We played great in the first period and third period," Molloy said. "But we got outplayed in the second, and it came back on us. We just have to keep playing like this and something good is bound to happen."
The Trojans return to action next weekend when they take on the NAIT Ooks in a home-and-home series.
