SAIT edged by NAIT
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Feb. 15, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team could not find a way to earn a weekend sweep.
In the back end of a home-and-home Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) weekend series with the NAIT Ooks, the Trojans were beaten 2-1 in Edmonton.
The loss comes 24 hours after SAIT scored three times in the final 20 minutes of play to beat the Ooks on home ice.
SAIT falls to 5-16-1 on the season. NAIT improves to 12-9-1.
Things looked good early for SAIT, as they took a 1-0 lead just 4:20 into the first period when Tashel Scantlebury (5th year, Foxwarren, Man., Community Economic Development) scored her fourth of the season.
Unfortunately, that is where the goals ended for the Trojans, as Ooks goalie Ashley Smith turned aside 19 of 20 shots to pick up the win.
NAIT's Michaela Kibblewhite scored in the first period to tie the game before Jordan McMillan scored with just six minutes left in the game to win it.
Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) was tagged with the loss after giving up a pair of goals on 25 shots faced.
SAIT, who hold the fourth and final playoff spot available, now head into their most important weekend series of the year as they take on the one team trying to chase them down, the Olds College Broncos, in a home-and-home series.
They both are tied with 11 points, but SAIT holds the tiebreaker with five regulation wins compared to Olds' four.
Thursday's game goes in Olds at 7pm, while Saturday's rematch will be played back at SAIT at 7pm.
