Trojans season comes to a close after Game 2 loss
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 28, 2020) - The end of the road has come for the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team.
The Trojans gave up four straight unanswered goals, as they fell 5-1 to the MacEwan Griffins in Game 2 of their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) best-of-three series, giving the Griffins a 2-0 series victory.
"Yeah, it was a heartbreaker," said Trojans captain Tashel Scantlebury (5th year, Foxwarren, Man., Community Economic Development). "But, I am really proud of this team and how we responded in the third. Everything was left out there on the ice. It was a fun season with this group of girls."
On Thursday night, SAIT fell to the host Griffins 4-2, putting them in a hole for Friday night.
In Friday's game, MacEwan did not wait long to get on the board, as Jill MacWilliam scored just 38 seconds into the game to put the visitors up early.
SAIT rebounded nicely, however, as just over three minutes later, they tied it when Kelsey Patterson (2nd year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology) went top shelf on Griffins goalie Brianna Sank.
From there, it was all Griffins.
Chantal Ricker and Karlie Bell each scored by the end of the opening period to give them a 3-1 lead after one.
MacEwan added two more in the second period from Sydney Hughson and Amanda Murray to round out the scoring.
The Griffins, who have won the past three ACAC titles, will now move on to the championship best-of-three series against the winner of NAIT and Red Deer College. In Game 1 of their semifinal series Friday night, NAIT won 5-2.
