Trojans fall hard in Friday afternoon road game
CAMROSE, ALTA., (Sept. 13, 2019) — The first win of the season continues to elude the SAIT Trojans women's soccer team.
Playing in a rare Friday afternoon contest, the Trojans were beaten 5-2 by the host University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in Camrose, Alta.
"There's a lot of learning to come from this game," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "We're not in bad shape, as we have 10 more games this season. We can choose to be upset, or choose to re-focus on concentrate on the next game, and that's what we'll do."
The Trojans fall to 0-2 on the season. Augustana wins their first game of the year, and now sit at 1-2.
Despite having 'four or five breakaways' in the opening half, the Trojans found themselves down 3-1 at the break. Their lone goal came off the foot of Emma Wheeldon (3rd year, Nelson, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration).
"As a young team, it can be deflating to not capitalize on those chances," Talerico said. "But, at the same time, we kept it positive throughout the game and kept our heads up. We never quit, which I was glad to see."
In the second half, SAIT cut into the lead when first-year player Mackenzie Georgsen (1st year, Chestermere, Alta., Architectural Technologies) scored her second goal in as many games.
Following that, however, a couple of errors led to two more goals by the home side to end things.
SAIT will look to end their two-game skid to start the year on Sunday when they head to Red Deer to take on the Queens in a 12pm start.
