Trojans score six in season's first 'W'
RED DEER, ALTA., (Sept. 15, 2019) — The third time was indeed the charm for the SAIT Trojans women's soccer team.
The Trojans notched their first win of the season on Sunday, beating the host Red Deer College Queens 6-0 to move their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division record to 1-2.
"It was a good all-around performance. We're starting to become more of a team, and it's nice to see," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "We moved the ball well, and were more of a cohesive unit – both offensively and defensively."
The Queens fall to 1-3 following the defeat.
SAIT scored twice in the opening half, with the first coming off the foot of Aki Fujimori (1st year, Tokyo, Japan, English Language Foundations).
Teammate Skye Gordon (3rd year, Langley, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) connected on a penalty kick later in the half to send SAIT into halftime with the 2-0 lead.
Following the break, Jade Metz (1st year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) scored a pair of goals, while Jaime McPherson (2nd year, Fort St. John, BC, Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles) and Jessica Gabel (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Diagnostic Medical Sonography) rounded out the scoring.
Next weekend, the Trojans will play twice – Saturday, Sept. 21 at home against Medicine Hat College, and Sunday on the road against Lethbridge College. Both games are set to start at noon.
"We're happy, yes, but we have to stay grounded," Talerico stated. "Those two games are going to be critical for us . . . we just need to keep our focus."
