Five Trojans named to All-Conference Team
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 28, 2021) - The SAIT Trojans women's soccer team made school history.
Five members of the No. 2 ranked team in Canada were named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference South Division All-Conference Team on Thursday - eclipsing the program's record of four set back in the 2017-18 season.
The five included forward Meaghan Wiebe, midfielders Jaime McPherson and Kenzie Georgsen, defender Jasmin Salmon and goalkeeper Erin Mergen.
"This shows the quality of players we have in this fantastic group," said Trojans coach, John Talerico, who was named the South's Coach of the Year. "And not just the five who were selected, but everyone on this team supporting them and wanting us to succeed."
McPherson, Wiebe and Mergen all earn the nod for the first time in their ACAC careers, while Georgsen and Salmon were named for the second straight season. Salmon's first came while as a member of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the 2019-20 season.
Wiebe put together an impressive rookie season, scoring 13 goals in just six regular season games. Her offensive prowess also earned her the South Division's Rookie and Player of the Year awards.
McPherson's selection comes in her third season at SAIT. She captained her team to a perfect 6-0 record this season, with Talerico calling her "the best captain I've ever had."
Despite being in only her second year, Georgsen was counted on this season to help bring along the younger players. Talerico says her willingness to learn is one of her greatest attributes.
Mergen was a rock in net for the Trojans in her rookie season, earning a pair of shutouts and giving up just six goals all season long.
Salmon joined the Trojans this season after spending her first three years in the ACAC with Medicine Hat and Lethbridge College. Her calm demeanor and ability to shut down opposing team's attacks played a large role in SAIT giving up an average of one goal per game.
