Sweep completed, as Trojans dust Broncos
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 16, 2018) — After a slow start, the SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team turned things around.
Following a loss in the opening set, the Trojans came back and took the next three to beat the visiting Olds College Broncos 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-12) in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"When we started to put our serves in and stopped handing them points, that's when things started to go our way," said Trojans setter, Veronica Headley (5th year, Calgary, Business Administration). "Making sure we take care of our side and the things we can control is big for us."
SAIT moves to 7-3 on the year. Olds College falls to 0-10.
In the first set, SAIT did not do much to help themselves. Errors of the communication, hitting and service kind allowed the Broncos to get out to an early lead and hold on for a 25-22 win.
After that, however, it was all Trojans.
Wins in Sets 2 and 3 by SAIT seemed to take the air out of the sails for the Broncos. In Set 4, the Trojans closed out the match with a dominant 25-12 win.
"We just reminded ourselves that this was our house," Headley said when asked about the conversation between the first and second set. "We also talked about having some pride in our touches and that seemed to wake us up."
Headley finished the match with 30 assists and four service aces. Teammate Jadyn Leong (2nd year, Calgary, Emergency Medical Technician) added 13 kills and eight digs.
Megan Gleddie led the Broncos with seven kills.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend with a home-and-home set against Medicine Hat College – Friday night on the road, Saturday night at home.
