Trojans fall in season opener
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 10, 2019) - Sure, it wasn't the result SAIT Trojans women's volleyball head coach Art O'Dwyer wanted in his first time out, but he saw enough from his team to not hang his head about it.
His Trojans fell in three straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-22) to the visiting Ambrose University Lions to kick off their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season Thursday night at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"The first few sets, we just gave them too many easy points," said Trojans head coach Art O'Dwyer. "As a group, it was pretty good. The result was not what we wanted, sure, but I don't think 3-0 is a good indication of how good this game really was."
SAIT falls to 0-1 on the year, while Ambrose moves to 1-0.
"The first question we're going to ask is are we competitive, and the second question is can we be more competitive," O'Dwyer added. "The answer to both of those is yes, so that's what we have to take away from tonight's game."
Jadyn Leong (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) led the Trojans with 13 kills and nine digs. Teammate Anne Krywitsky added eight kills and nine digs of her own.
Willow Lewington paced the Lions with 11 kills and two aces.
The Trojans will return to action next week with a home-and-home series against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks - Friday night on the road, Saturday back at home. Both games are set to begin at 6pm.
