Clippers service game too tough for Trojans
CARONPORT, SASK., (Nov. 23, 2019) - One team adjusted. The other did not adjust enough.
The SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-, 25-16, 25-14) to the host Briercrest College Clippers on Saturday afternoon after the home team decided to get a little more aggressive with their serve than they did in a 3-1 victory on Friday.
"First contact," said Trojans head coach Art O'Dwyer. "I know I sound like a broken record, but they just served us out of the building. If we're not in system, we're in trouble, and that's what happened today."
SAIT falls to 2-9 on the season. Briercrest stays perfect at 10-0.
"When you're never behind in a match, you can serve aggressively," O'Dwyer said. "They were feeling it today, and we couldn't handle it."
Trojans middle Jordyn Shewchuk (3rd year, Innisfail, Alta., Graphic Communications and Print Technology) had a big game at the service line, recording five aces.
Briercrest's Rebecca Garner led her team to victory with 18 kills in just three sets of work.
SAIT has three games left before the holiday break, with two of those coming next weekend in a home-and-home series against the Red Deer College Queens.
"There are steps to getting better, and we need to work on those steps and be more challenging to play against," O'Dywer stated. "It's hard because we are improving, but sometimes that gets lost when we're playing the toughest teams in the league. We just need to stay confident."
