Trojans top Rattlers to end losing streak
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 17, 2020) - After talk of how much better they have been playing as of late, the SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team were finally rewarded for their efforts.
The Trojans ended an 11-game losing streak Friday night, beating the visiting Medicine Hat College Rattlers 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"It's been a long haul, and these kids have been working hard. It's nice to get something tangible for them," said Trojans head coach Art O'Dwyer. "It gets a little old hearing me say, 'You're getting better.'"
SAIT moves to 3-14 on the season, while the Rattlers fall to 8-7.
Aiding the Trojans in their victory was a new look, and faster, offence. After winning Set 1 25-17, the home side raced through the second set to take another 25-17 decision.
"We've been working on being faster and adding more back row," O'Dwyer added. "The idea is it makes us a little tougher to deal with."
The Trojans were led by Jadyn Leong (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration), who recorded 16 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Teammate Irina Korovina (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) added nine kills and five service aces.
Brooke Christie paced the Rattlers with a team-high six kills.
The Trojans will look to add another tick in the win column Saturday night when they head to Medicine Hat in the weekend finale. Game time is set for 6pm.
"We have to come back tomorrow and play well again," O'Dwyer finished. "They're going to play a lot better on their home floor, so we'll have to match that."
