Trojans fall in O'Dwyer's Campus Centre sendoff
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 14, 2020) - The game wasn't perfect, but the sendoff for Trojans women's volleyball head coach Art O'Dwyer helped ease the pain.
The longtime head coach of the Trojans said goodbye to SAIT's Campus Centre on Friday night after his team lost 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 26-24) to the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks. He announced this past week that this weekend will be his final Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season, ending nine years at the helm.
"We ended way too many rallies on our hand," said O'Dwyer minutes after being celebrated in a post-game ceremony. "We had chances to end rallies, but we'd hit it out or did this and that. We just didn't make them earn enough points."
Family, friends and former players of his all came out on Friday night to show support for O'Dwyer, who expressed regret in not being able to give them a win to cheer for.
"I would have liked the outcome to be different," he said. "It's bittersweet because I have a lot of good times and a lot of good memories of this place. To see all the people come out was really nice."
Jadyn Leong (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) led the Trojans with 12 kills and two service aces.
Jamie Brown paced the Kodiaks with 12 kills of her own.
O'Dwyer's final ACAC game will go Saturday night in Lethbridge. Game time is set for 6pm.
"We have to execute better and we have to figure out a way to not be so tense" he said.
